Lori Carson -- Everything I Touch Runs Wild
1996

I discovered Lori Carson on the soundtrack to the movie Niagara, Niagara, where she delivered a song entitled "Black Thumb". "Black Thumb" makes its appearance as the third song on this CD, and the lyrics provide the the title of the CD as well. It is an intense and strangely tired song, tired in the sense that her vocals sound like there is a great amount of contemplation and labor as she sings about her acceptance that she seems to cause pain in a relationship that just ended or is at least struggling; this is her is her "Black Thumb". Her voice complements the lyrics, with regret and understanding that everything she touches "becomes a pile of dust".

This theme of responsibility runs through this CD. A sample of this theme can be seen from this sample of lyrics from the first five songs: "Turns out I don't know how..." "I'm going to make a little life for myself... I'm going to make a little luck" "Everything I touch runs wild" "I don't want to fuck up anything" "I don't know why I am the way I am...".

Her music makes me think of Sade, but far more contemplative. The melodies are slow and her voice is sometimes whispy, so be prepared.
